都大成立深圳研究院及研究生院全速前進提升實力 HKMU powers ahead with new Shenzhen Research Institute and Graduate School

香港都會大學（都大）深圳研究院（深研院）今年 3 月開幕，是都大發展的重要里程碑。出任院長的都大副校長（研究及拓展）郭予光教授接受《都大與我》訪問時表示，深研院是大學立足中國內地的策略據點，推動產學研融合發展，讓研究在社會應用層面發揮更大影響。深研院連同本學年成立的研究生院，將成為都大推動研究的兩大支柱，大大提升大學的研究實力。 The opening of HKMU Shenzhen Research Institute (HKMU SZRI) in March marked a significant milestone for the University. In an interview with MU Connect , Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement) and Director of the Institute, talks about the vision to build the facility as HKMU’s strategic base on the Chinese Mainland that will help bridge industry, academia and research, bringing research to a higher level of real-world impact. The Institute, together with the new Graduate School, forms HKMU’s twin research arms, a new infrastructure that is poised to boost R&D capacity at the University greatly.

深圳虛擬大學園 Shenzhen Virtual University Park

Strategic base on Mainland

立足深圳連繫全國

HKMU has invested over RMB 32 million to establish the Institute, making it Hong Kong’s first self-financing tertiary institution that has been admitted to the Shenzhen Virtual University Park (SZVUP). The SZVUP, established by the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government as an innovative demonstration base for collaboration among industry, education and research, integrates the resources of established universities, both local and overseas. Prof. Kwok says the aim of setting up the Institute aligns well with the National 15th Five-Year Plan, which supports Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology hub. It also serves to provide more space as HKMU diversifies its research profile. “We made great efforts, step by step, to secure the space for the Institute,” he notes. “It did not come easy. We are very determined to develop HKMU SZRI into a vibrant, sustainable research platform and deliver positive impact to society.” HKMU has been committed to advancing research and development in recent years. Since filing its first batch of applications for research outcomes made under its auspices in 2023, HKMU has acquired or sought patents for more than 70 items. Last year, the University secured its first intellectual property licensing agreement, allowing a health-care firm based in the United Kingdom (UK) to further develop an early detection technology for prostate cancer for clinical application.

都大投入超過 3,200 萬元人民幣成立深研院，是首間進駐深圳虛擬大學園的香港自資院校。深圳虛擬大學園由深圳市人民政府以一園多校、市校共建模式建設，集合了國內外知名院校的資源，作為創新型產學研結合的示範基地。郭教授說，深研院的成立，正好配合國家「十五五」規劃下，香港建設為國際創新科技中心的戰略部署；而隨着都大科研項目日趨多元，深研院亦可提供所需空間。郭教授強調：「深研院的空間都是大學『從零到一』，一步一步爭取回來，得來不易。我們很有決心，將都大深研院發展成持續運作、充滿活力的研究平台，為社會帶來裨益。」事實上，都大近年積極投入研究工作。大學自 2023 年開始就研究成果申請專利，至今擁有和已提交申請的專利超過 70 項，並於去年與一家英國醫療公司簽訂大學首項技術授權協議，讓大學研發的技術可用於開發前列腺癌的早期檢測工具。

President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing has emphasised to staff and the media on different occasions that HKMU must focus its research efforts on specific strategic areas given its status as a self-financing institution, which comes with comparatively limited resources. He called for HKMU research to be application-oriented, with the dual aim of tackling real-world problems and enhancing teaching and learning. In his interview, Prof Kwok expresses optimism that HKMU SZRI can address these gaps.

不過，正如校長林群聲教授曾於不同場合對大學職員和傳媒表示，都大作為自資院校，研究資源相對有限，故研究必須聚焦於大學已訂立的策略重點範疇；他並說，大學研究定位應以應用為主，着重解決實際問題，以及並有助提升教與學效能。郭教授相信，都大深研院將能夠回應大學這些需要。

Going from strength to strength

研究領域建基於都大強項

The first phase of the Institute, in operation since last June, offers 670 square metres of wet and dry laboratories, as well as an office and a meeting room. Plans for the second and third phases are underway and will add a further 800 square metres of laboratory space. The Institute is currently home to a team of about 20 principal investigators and researchers from the University, as well as about 30 research and staff members recruited by HKMU SZRI and based at the Institute. Turning to its research focus, Prof. Kwok says the Institute concentrates on four major areas in its early stages, with 12 projects underway: biomedical life science, net zero and environmental technologies, quantum technology, and digital fabrication and art-tech. “These areas build on HKMU’s existing strengths,” he says. “All are strongly application-oriented, with research outcomes ready to be transformed into real-world benefits. Some of the teams have established collaborations with Mainland partners, complementing each other’s strengths.”

都大深研院自去年 6 月投入運作，首期用地約 670 平方米，包括濕式實驗室、乾式實驗室、辦公室及會議室。院方正規劃第二期和第三期發展項目，預計將增設共約 800 平方米的實驗室空間。除了約 20 位現職大學本部的科研項目負責人及研究員，深研院亦額外聘請了約 30 名研究人員和職員在當地工作。郭教授表示，深研院在初始階段聚焦四大研究領域，進行 12 個研究項目，涵蓋生物醫學生命科學、淨零排放及環境技術、量子技術，以及數碼製造與藝術技術。他解釋：「這些領域均建基於都大現有的研究基礎和優勢，具應用導向，並已部署就緒，成果可轉化落地。事實上，深研院早已有團隊與內地科研機構合作，互補優勢。」他舉例指，都大的紅樹林生態研究團隊多年來一直與深圳大學和廣東內伶仃福田國家級自然保護區管理局有堅實的合作，深研院將在此基礎上，建立一支世界頂尖團隊，專注於紅樹林和濱海濕地的基礎及應用研究。另外，深研院將與長春理工大學中山研究院展開光電工程研究及醫護機械的合作研究，並與深圳技術大學聯手進行無線通訊方面的研究項目。

For example, HKMU researchers of the mangrove ecosystem have a long- standing collaboration with Shenzhen University and the administrative body of Guangdong Neilingding Island-Futian National Nature Reserve. This is the base from which the Institute will work to establish a world- class research team dedicated to both fundamental and applied studies of mangroves and coastal wetlands. Other plans include joint explorations into optoelectronic engineering and healthcare robotics with the Zhongshan Institute of Changchun University of Science and Technology, and into wireless communications with Shenzhen Technology University.

Prof. Kwok says the Institute plans to apply for research funding, train PhD students and deliver academic programmes, all jointly with partner institutions. He believes that HKMU will benefit from the close connections between its Mainland partners and local enterprises, which could expedite the commercialisation of research outcomes and benefit society. At the same time, HKMU can integrate such outcomes into its curricula, equipping students with the latest knowledge in applied sciences. HKMU SZRI was successfully registered as a public institution on the Chinese Mainland in December last year. Prof. Kwok believes this status allows the Institute to engage with different stakeholders across the country, including government, industry and tertiary institutions, to receive support for research projects and talent recruitment. The Institute is actively applying for various Mainland research grants and funding, diversifying its research funding sources. For a start, it has obtained its first grant, of about RMB 2 million, from the Science, Technology and Innovation Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality.

郭教授續指，深研院將與合作院校聯合申請研究經費、培育博士生和推出課程。他相信，這些學術機構與當地企業的連繫將有助團隊把研究成果轉化落地，貢獻社會；而研究成果亦對都大課程有所裨益，教研人員可教授學生最新的應用科學知識。都大深研院於去年 12 月成功在中國內地登記設立為事業單位。郭教授相信，此舉有助深研院與全國內地包括政府、產業和高校等不同持份者全面對接，開拓合作機會，並爭取在科研和人才引進等方面的配套支持。深研院目前正積極申請內地各類基金項目和科研經費，拓闊研究經費來源，並已成功獲得首項資助，由深圳市科技創新局資助近 200 萬元人民幣。熊景輝博士（右一）與團隊研究量子機器學習框架，為心血管疾病分類。 Dr Kevin Hung King-fai (far right) leads a team on quantum machine learning for cardiovascular disease classification.

Graduate School of international standards

設研究生院與國際接軌

Another part of HKMU’s new research infrastructure is the Graduate School, opened in the 2025/26 academic year, which aims to enhance the academic and research environment for research postgraduate students and the supporting services available to them. “The role of the Graduate School is to put in place a clear, comprehensive talent development framework that aligns with international standards and keeps pace with the times,” says Prof. Kwok, who serves as its first Dean. In addition to overseeing admissions, examinations and degree conferment to strengthen quality assurance, the School provides comprehensive support to research postgraduate students. This includes refining incentive schemes to encourage their participation in academic conferences and offering career counselling tailored to their needs. The School will also introduce a broad range of core courses to support students’ all-round development.

與都大深研院相輔相成的，是 2025/26 學年成立的都大研究生院，旨在為研究式研究生建立理想的學術和研究環境，並優化對他們的支援服務。

兼任研究生院首任院長的郭教授說：「研究生院的角色是建立清晰完善、與國際接軌的人才培育架構，與時並進。」

研究生院在收生、考試、頒授學位等事項上均擔任管理和督導的角色，加強品質保證，並為學生提供全方位支援，例如優化獎勵機制以鼓勵學生參與學術會議，以及提供切合研究式研究生需要的職涯輔導等。院方亦將設立多元核心課程，協助學生全面發展。

Enrolment in HKMU’s research postgraduate programmes in recent years has grown steadily. The Graduate School plans to increase studentship support to attract more students. “With a robust system in place, we will be better positioned to seek collaborations on the Chinese Mainland and overseas, including the UK and other parts of Europe,” Prof. Kwok says. “This includes initiatives such as joint doctoral programmes, enabling HKMU to nurture talent with a stronger international outlook.”

Shenzhen research arm draws foreign talent

HKMU SZRI is committed to building a diverse team with international experience, and has attracted overseas researchers with interdisciplinary expertise. One of them is Dr Muhammad Rizwan from Pakistan. Dr Rizwan earned a PhD in Experimental Physics from Air University in Pakistan focusing on advanced functional nanomaterials and hybrid nanostructures. He previously worked at the University of Glasgow in the UK and the University of Hamburg in Germany. It is the first time Dr Rizwan is working in China. He cites the HKMU SZRI’s strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and support for nanotechnology as attractive conditions. The Institute’s vision to translate fundamental research into practical applications aligns well with his professional goals, he adds. At the Institute, Dr Rizwan works under the supervision of Prof. Roy Vellaisamy, Chair Professor of Intelligent Systems at HKMU’s School of Science and Technology. He is dedicated to developing a non- invasive diagnostic method for bladder cancer based on detecting DNA methylation in urine samples. He is working on the design and mapping of receptors capable of selectively binding methylated DNA. At the same time, he is taking part in research on advanced nanomaterials that can be used in clean energy and environmental applications. “The culture at HKMU SZRI is highly dynamic and supportive,” he says. “There is a strong emphasis on teamwork, and everyone is open to exchanging knowledge and ideas.” Having visited the HKMU main campus in Hong Kong, he notes that the two sites complement each other to create a productive and enriching work dynamic. “While Shenzhen provides a stable and collaborative base for my day-to-day work, Hong Kong offers valuable opportunities for broader academic exposure and exchange.”

深研院吸納國際人才

都大深研院致力建立具國際經驗及多元背景的科研人才，吸納了數名來自海外、具跨學科背景的研究員，來自巴基斯坦的 Muhammad Rizwan 博士正是其中一員。 Rizwan 博士於巴基斯坦 Air University 取得實驗物理學博士學位，研究涵蓋先進功能納米材料和混合納米結構。他曾於英國格拉斯哥大學、德國漢堡大學從事相關研究，這是他首次來到中國工作。他表示，深研院非常重視跨學科研究，並支持納米科技的研究，是吸引他加入的原因；院方鼓勵將基礎科研轉化為實際應用，與他的長遠發展目標一致。現時， Rizwan 博士於都大科技學院智能系統講座教授華禮生教授指導下工作，致力開發一種非入侵性、基於尿液中 DNA 甲基化的膀胱癌診斷方法，他負責設計和找出可選擇性地與甲基化 DNA 結合的受體。他亦參與應用於清潔能源與環境的先進納米材料研究。他分享道：「深研院的工作環境充滿活力，同僚間互相支持，強調團隊合作，大家都樂意分享知識和想法。」他曾到訪都大香港本部校園，形容兩地相輔相成，共同營造高效、充實的工作氛圍：「深圳為我的日常工作提供了穩定且具協作性的基地，香港則給我帶來了更廣闊的學術視野和豐富的交流機會。」

香港都會大學創意廣告及媒體設計二年級生唐沁愉（ Chloe ）於「香港迪士尼樂園度假區 20 周年大專插畫比賽」中奪冠，贏得在商品部實習的機會，與香港迪士尼團隊合力創作全新史迪仔系列商品上架，向夢想踏出一步。 Chloe Tong Tsam-yu, a second-year Creative Advertising and Media Design student at HKMU, won the top prize at the Hong Kong Disneyland 20th Anniversary Illustration Contest and became an intern on its merchandise team to help create a new Stitch product line — taking her first real step towards realising her dream.

A visibly rewarding creative foray into Disney Dare to try: 走進香港迪士尼創作之旅

Inside Chloe’s sketchbook is a cast she has moulded herself — characters with sharply drawn personalities and stories all their own. Immersed in fiction from an early age, Chloe has always been drawn to adventure and fantasy, including many of Disney’s classic stories. Writing scripts and inventing characters is the part of creative work she loves most, driving her ambition to command a brand of original characters one day as intellectual property entirely under her name. Her choice to take the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Creative Advertising and Media Design at HKMU was a deliberate step in that direction to pursue marketing strategy and media studies. When she heard about the Hong Kong Disneyland contest last summer and learnt that the top prize was an internship, she threw her hat into the ring — and came out on top.

談起創作，沁愉最喜歡編寫劇本和設計人物，她的畫冊裏畫滿了外型鮮明的角色。她希望將來成為一位原創角色設計師，打造屬於自己的角色品牌（ IP ）。自小沉浸於小說世界的她，尤其鍾情冒險與奇幻題材，包括多個迪士尼經典故事。她選讀都大創意廣告及媒體設計榮譽文學士課程，正是希望深入學習市場策劃與媒體運作，向夢想進發。去年暑假當她得悉香港迪士尼首次舉辦這個比賽並知道獎品是一個實習的機會後，便鼓起勇氣踏上賽道，最後更脫穎而出，令她喜出望外。

The character that found her

選擇有共鳴的角色

During her internship with the Hong Kong Disneyland merchandise team, Chloe and her colleagues created a fresh themed line of products, including plush key chains, water bottles, postcards, pouches and T-shirts. She proposed Stitch as the main character because the story of the alien and his young Hawaiian friend Lilo had moved her deeply since childhood. In the tale, Lilo is isolated for her quirky, free-spirited ideas. For Chloe, Stitch’s name also suggests an image of mending: he enters Lilo’s life, ends her loneliness and becomes her companion. It struck a deep chord in Chloe, whose own childhood was spent absorbed in fantasy worlds, struggling to find kindred spirits and to be understood. “I came up with the line ’Stitch Up the Spring’ as a nod to his name. The key that unlocks spring has gone missing, and Stitch sets off to look for it and bring spring back to the forest.”

在香港迪士尼商品部實習期間，沁愉與團隊負責創作一套全新主題的系列商品，包括毛公仔掛袋飾物、水壺、明信片、小物袋和 T 恤。她提出以史迪仔（ Stitch ）為主角，皆因這個關於夏威夷女孩妮露和外星生物史迪仔的故事，自小已深深打動她。她解釋，妮露因趣怪跳脫的想法而被排擠，而名字有「縫合」之意的史迪仔出現後，成為她的伙伴，令她不再孤單。沁愉自小愛在魔幻故事世界中流連，其喜好往往不被人理解，因此對這個故事深感共鳴。「我將系列命名為 Stitch Up the Spring ，與『縫合』的概念呼應。開啟春天的鑰匙不見了，史迪仔踏上尋找之旅，為森林找回春天。」

From storyboard to meeting room

從獨自創作到團隊協作

Mr Justin Chan Wai-yin, Merchandise Operations Integration Manager at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL), explains that HKDL staged its first tertiary illustration contest last year to mark the resort’s 20th anniversary, inviting art and design students from selected institutions to showcase their talent. He was glad to have Chloe on board. “We learnt that Chloe’s favourite Disney character was Stitch — and as Stitch is hugely loved by fans, the choice of main character for the line came together quickly,” he says. “We gave Chloe space to explore, and it’s been a delight to see her work with the team to give a new take on Stitch.” HKDL will also donate a portion of the proceeds from merchandise sales related to the project to HKMU, to establish a scholarship that supports talent development and stir creative energy in the community. Ms Sammi Yuen Wan-kiu, Associate Manager, Product Development of Merchandise at HKDL and Chloe’s direct supervisor, says that within the short span of two months, Chloe has taken part in every stage from concept to product design. She credits Chloe for bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to the team. The response since launch has been encouraging, with some guests visiting the park specifically to buy items from the line. Ms Yuen is glad to see how Chloe has grown. “She was a little shy at the start of the internship, but as her confidence grew, she ended up presenting her own product line to dozens of colleagues at the department meeting.” Chloe says she carries a lesson acquired from her HKMU programme: ideas alone are not enough — you have to know how to execute them, to make them “land”. During her internship, the timing was right. Her coursework had taught her the relevant design software, letting her apply what she had learnt straight away.

香港迪士尼樂園度假區商品營運綜合策劃經理陳偉賢先生表示，度假區去年適逢 20 周年，遂首次舉辦大專插畫比賽，邀請本地大專院校藝術及設計系學生參加，讓他們展現創意和才能，很高興因此有機會讓沁愉成為團隊一員。他說：「我們知道 Chloe 最喜歡的迪士尼角色是史迪仔，而史迪仔亦深受粉絲喜愛，因此很快便決定由他擔當商品系列主角。我們給予 Chloe 發揮創意的空間，樂見她與團隊合力為史迪仔創作了新形象。」香港迪士尼將該項目商品銷售的部分利潤撥捐都大，以設立獎學金，支持大學培育人才，期望為社區注入創意和想像力。沁愉的直屬上司、香港迪士尼樂園度假區商品企劃副經理阮韻橋女士說，在短短兩個月內，從概念構思到產品設計，沁愉都全程參與，讚賞她為團隊帶來嶄新想法和多元視角。商品推出後大受歡迎，有遊客更專程入園購買。她很高興看到沁愉的成長：「她在實習初期略顯害羞，但隨着經驗累積，後來已能在數十人的商品部會議中，自信地介紹自己設計的產品系列。」沁愉說，大學課程讓她深刻體會到不能空有構思，還要懂得將想法具體執行和「落地」；而在實習期間，大學剛好教授相關的設計軟件，讓她能即時學以致用，在工作時更加得心應手。

實戰經驗中磨練成長

她坦言，在創作過程中曾一度自我懷疑：「我為角色設計的西裝造型，大家會不會喜歡？我向同事請教，聽他們建議，將構思逐一拆解為具體細節，再研究當中哪些元素可以採用。」最後，她成功替史迪仔配上「煲呔」，令造型更具特色。她說，自己一向習慣獨自創作，而這次在團隊的指導下，讓她看見更多可能性，也更有信心與他人溝通協作。

Learning from the workplace

She admits that self-doubt crept in along the way. “The suit I’d designed for the character — would people like it? I went to my colleagues for advice, took their suggestions on board, and broke down my idea into specific details to work out which elements could stay.” In the end, Chloe settled on a bow tie for Stitch — a touch that added personality. A years-long habit of creating on her own was turned on its head as the team’s guidance opened her eyes to new possibilities and gave her more confidence in working with others, she says. Chloe’s teacher, Dr Wong Wing-hong, Senior Lecturer at the School of Arts and Social Sciences, is proud that she and two fellow HKMU students have swept the contest’s top three places. He talks about how the University’s design courses have always given students room to experiment. “We let students lead the process — from picking the brand and doing market research to understanding the client and the target audience. They have to do the legwork, find the selling points and then create.” Chloe’s internship stint illustrates that HKMU students can design products to commercial standards while gaining real-world experience which prepares them for the workplace, he adds. After the internship ended, Hong Kong Disneyland offered Chloe a part-time role to continue developing a career in design. The experience has confirmed her resolve to build a life as a designer of original characters. To classmates with dreams of their own, she offers a word of encouragement: “You have to try — only then will you be seen.”

Living tradition in young hands: HKMU Chinese Music Project brings the art within reach 樂承新篇 —— 都大中國音樂計劃普及中華藝術

The orchestra is the flagship of the University’s Chinese Music Project, led by Dr Chan Chi-chun, Lecturer in the School of Arts and Social Sciences. A dizi (Chinese flute) and xiao (vertical bamboo flute) player by training, Dr Chan specialises in Chinese funeral music traditions and served as a Taoist music consultant for the 2024 hit film The Last Dance . He joined HKMU in 2024 and teaches Cantonese opera art, an introduction to Chinese folk vocal arts, and Chinese music and film music, among other subjects. “HKMU does not have a music department or a major in Chinese music,” Dr Chan explains. “So I wanted to use traditional music as a vehicle for students to encounter, learn about and ultimately appreciate Chinese culture.” Backed by funding from the University’s Quality Enhancement Measures (QEM) Scheme for a three-year period, the project began rolling out last September and has quickly expanded. In addition to the orchestra, it now offers instrumental classes and a suite of general education courses covering Chinese music, film and popular music. Every Tuesday at dusk, the auditorium on HKMU’s Jockey Club Campus comes alive with the sound of Chinese music. Students from across the disciplines bend over their stands, polishing passages until they shine. This is the HKMU Chinese Orchestra, formed in March, bringing fresh cultural energy into campus life. 每逢週二黃昏，來自不同學科的同學聚首於都大賽馬會校園的綜藝廳，專注於一段段國樂樂章的磨合，這是今年 3 月新成立的香港都會大學中樂團（都大中樂團）埋首練習的情景。樂團既有臥虎藏龍，亦有初哥加入，為校園注入清新的文化氣息。都大中樂團是「中國音樂計劃」的重點項目，由人文社會科學院講師陳子晉博士出任計劃負責人。陳博士本身是笛子及洞簫演奏家，專研殯儀音樂，曾為電影《破‧地獄》擔任道教音樂顧問， 2024 年加入都大，任教粵劇藝術及曲藝概論、中國音樂及電影音樂等課程。「都大沒有音樂系或中國音樂主修課程，因此我想以中樂為媒介，讓學生有機會接觸、理解，以至欣賞中國文化。」陳博士說。計劃為期三年，獲校方「質素優化措施」計劃撥款資助，並自去年 9 月起開展多項工作，除了成立中樂團，還開辦器樂訓練班，以及推出通識教育課程，涵蓋中樂、電影與流行音樂。

大門為同學敞開

中樂團特聘黎家棣先生擔任指揮，他本身為中阮演奏家，具豐富的海外演出經驗，現任都大中阮班導師，亦擔任多間學校的中樂團指揮及藝術顧問。他說，中樂團歡迎不同程度的同學參與，不少團員由器樂訓練班起步。「我們在選曲及排練安排上會兼顧成員的不同程度，循序漸進，讓有經驗的同學發揮所長，初學者亦能找到自己的位置。」修讀高齡社會與服務研究的樂團成員陳思萁便是其中之一。她本身是草地滾球運動員，因興趣自學笛子，但遇到不少困難，於是報讀笛子班接受正規器樂訓練。她說，團內有演奏級同學，會主動幫助經驗較少的團員，「氣氛很和諧，令我更有動力練習」，亦希望透過加入樂團，為未來發展增添更多可能。都大中樂團現時由 50 多位同學和校友組成。陳博士笑言，團中「臥虎藏龍」，約八成具三年以上樂器演奏經驗，其中數位演奏古箏、二胡及笛子的成員更考獲中央音樂學院演奏級資格。但他強調：「培養職業演奏家不是我們的目標。我們重視以興趣為主導，透過排練與演出，讓更多同學願意走進樂團，令中樂融入校園生活。」

Open to all

The HKMU Chinese Orchestra has more than 50 members drawn from students and alumni. Dr Chan happily admits there are “crouching tigers and hidden dragons” in the ranks. About 80 per cent of members have at least three years of playing experience, and several guzheng , erhu and dizi players hold performance-level certification from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. But the orchestra is intentionally inclusive. “Producing professional performers is not our goal,” he emphasises. “We adopt an interest-led approach. Through rehearsals and performances, we want more students to feel welcome in the orchestra, and we want Chinese music to become part of campus life.” The orchestra appointed Mr Sebastien Lai Ka-tai as its conductor. A zhongruan (plucked string instrument) player, Mr Lai has performed extensively overseas and teaches the Project’s instrument class. He also serves as a conductor and artistic adviser for Chinese orchestras at several local schools. He says the ensemble welcomes players of every level, and many members started out in the Project’s beginner classes. “We pitch the repertoire and rehearsal plan to a range of abilities, building up step by step, so that the more experienced players have room to shine while the beginners can also find their place.” Emily Chan Sze-kei, a student of the Ageing Society and Services Studies programme, is one such newcomer. A competitive lawn bowler, she taught herself the dizi but encountered difficulties, leading to her decision to sign up for the Project’s dizi class to receive her first formal instrumental training. “Some of our performance-level members go to great lengths to help those of us with less experience,” she says. “The atmosphere is so harmonious, motivating me to practise harder.” She hopes that joining the orchestra will open up new possibilities for what comes for her future. Ada Chan Tsz-ching, who is studying Applied Social Studies, has been playing the pipa for 12 years since she was eight. She joined the orchestra to relieve academic pressure and to meet like-minded friends. To prepare for her first performance, she once rehearsed for more than six hours straight. “It challenged my concentration and stamina but seeing everyone striving together for a common goal gave me a sense of fulfilment, making it more than worth it,” she says.

初試啼聲：走進粵韻書香中

今年 5 月，「中國音樂計劃」聯同都大何陳婉珍粵劇研藝中心及大學圖書館，合辦音樂演奏會，初試啼聲。當日約有 30 位團員參與，以熱烈的《歡欣舞曲》及《龍舞》為活動揭開序幕，再為粵曲演唱伴奏，展現中樂的多元面貌。中國音樂計劃亦開辦了多項免費訓練課程，涵蓋多種樂器，今年初更邀得國家級非物質文化遺產項目古琴藝術首批代表性傳承人姚公白先生，開辦十節古琴入門班。在姚老師眼中，「古琴承載着深厚的生活文化底蘊，也有助修心養性」。姚老師於去年 11 月為都大首次舉辦的古琴文化講座擔任主講，他樂見大學推廣古琴藝術，並讓學生學習古琴。「短短十堂課，七位同學既增進了對古琴文化的了解，也能彈奏簡單小曲，如《仙翁操》、《黃鶯吟》和《南薰操》，已是很大的收穫。」他說。

In May, the Chinese Music Project made its public debut, in collaboration with the Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre and the University Library. About 30 members took to the stage, opening with two bright ensemble pieces — Dance of Joy and Dragon Dance — before accompanying a Cantonese opera recital. The programme was designed to showcase the range and versatility of Chinese music. The Project also offers a series of free training courses across a wide selection of instruments. Earlier this year, it welcomed renowned guqin master Mr Yao Gongbai, who is among the first batch of representative inheritors of the art of guqin as a national-level Intangible Cultural Heritage item, to teach a ten-session course for beginners. For Maestro Yao, the guqin is a form of cultural cultivation. “The guqin carries a deep wellspring of cultural life, and it helps to cultivate one’s mind and spirit,” he says. He gave a public lecture on guqin culture at the University last November. Maestro Yao is delighted to see HKMU promoting the art among students. “In just ten lessons, my seven students came to understand the guqin culture and could play simple pieces, such as Xian Weng Cao (Immortal’s Song) , Huang Ying Yin (Chant of Golden Oriole) and Nan Xun Cao (Melody of the Southern Breeze) . That is no small achievement,” he notes. Looking ahead, Dr Chan hopes that the orchestra will step beyond the campus, taking part in more performances and exchanges in the wider community. Our ambition, he says, is for the Chinese Music Project to become a bridge between the University and the city it calls home, and between a centuries-old tradition and a new generation ready to carry it forward.

展望未來，陳博士期望樂團能走出校園，參與更多演出與交流活動，讓「中國音樂計劃」成為連繫大學與社區的橋樑，推動中樂傳承和發展。

Starting from the 2026/27 academic year, eligible students can choose to pursue their final year at Sussex after completing the first three years of study at HKMU. Upon successful completion of the required credits at both institutions, graduates will be awarded a Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Global Business from HKMU and a Bachelor of Science in International Business from Sussex. This collaboration marks a milestone in HKMU’s efforts to expand its international partnerships and enhance students’ academic competitiveness globally.

A race against time: advancing early detection of life-threatening sepsis 推進膿毒症的早期檢測分秒必爭

Sepsis is a medical emergency in which the immune system overreacts to an infection, which can lead to organ failure or death. Each year, millions of people worldwide, including young children, die of sepsis. However, diagnosing and treating the disease remains a major challenge. Early symptoms often resemble those of minor illnesses, and a patient’s condition can deteriorate rapidly within days or even hours. There is an urgent need for faster and more accurate ways to detect sepsis before it becomes fatal. Prof. Jack Tang Wai‑ho (pictured), a molecular biologist and Head of Diagnostic Sciences in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at HKMU, is shedding new light on a lesser‑known but critical player in sepsis: platelets. These are the smallest cells in the blood and are essential for clotting to stop bleeding. His project, titled “Deciphering the pathophysiological role of platelet PANoptosis in sepsis”, began in January 2026 with HK$1.26 million in funding from the Research Grants Council. Prof. Tang earned his PhD from The University of Hong Kong, where he focused on cardiomyopathy among patients with diabetes. He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University, investigating why patients with diabetes had thicker, more reactive blood platelets than others. This ignited his interest in vascular disease and led him to HKMU in 2023.

膿毒症，又稱敗血症，是人體受感染後出現免疫失調反應的一種急症，可導致器官衰竭，甚至死亡。全球每年有數以百萬計的人死於膿毒症，當中不乏幼童。然而，由於膿毒症早期症狀往往與一般輕微疾病相似，而病情卻可能在數天，甚至數小時內迅速惡化，因此令診斷與治療至今仍充滿挑戰。醫學界當務之急，是研發更快捷、更準確的診斷方法。本身為分子生物學家的都大護理及健康學院診斷科學學系主任鄧偉豪教授（上圖），冀以新角度研究膿毒症，正聚焦研究血液中體積最小的細胞——負責止血和傷口癒合的血小板。今年 1 月，他開展「血小板泛凋亡在膿毒症中的調控作用及機制研究」項目，並獲研究資助局撥款 126 萬港元支持。鄧教授於香港大學完成博士學位，集中研究糖尿病患者出現心肌病的問題，其後在耶魯大學擔任博士後研究員，研究為何糖尿病患者的血小板較一般人更厚且反應更強。這段經歷燃起他對血管疾病的興趣，並於 2023 年加入都大。

Hard to diagnose in children

兒童患者難以察覺

Prof. Tang notes that diagnosing sepsis in children is particularly challenging. According to the World Health Organization, nearly half of all estimated sepsis cases worldwide occur in children under the age of five. “Young patients may struggle to communicate their symptoms, and early signs, such as fever and lethargy, are not specific to sepsis,” Prof. Tang explains. “Clinicians may therefore miss the critical window for early intervention.” He adds that blood culture, the “gold standard” for diagnosis, typically takes two to four days to deliver results, which can delay the identification of appropriate treatment.

鄧教授指出，診斷兒童是否患有膿毒症尤其困難。根據世界衞生組織的資料，全球估計膿毒症病例中，近半數患者為五歲以下兒童。他解釋：「年幼患者未必能清楚表達症狀，而發燒、倦怠等早期病徵亦非膿毒症獨有。臨床醫生可能錯失及早介入治療的良機。」

他補充，現時血液培養是診斷膿毒症的黃金標準，但一般需時兩至四天才有結果，或會延誤作出適切治療。

Zooming in on platelet cells

To address these challenges, the HKMU team is investigating whether platelets could serve as early indicators of disease severity. “If there are objective biomarkers that could help detect the disease at an early stage, doctors could act sooner, rather than relying on the more obvious signs that appear only at a later stage when sepsis turns severe,” Prof. Tang explains. While platelets are best known for blood clotting, Prof. Tang’s research focuses on their active role in the immune response, which can become harmful in sepsis. Their reaction can cause abnormal clotting, excessive inflammation and a sharp drop in platelet numbers, all of which can contribute to organ failure. The team’s research focuses on PANoptosis, a newly recognised form of inflammatory cell death that combines three self-destruct mechanisms, known as pyroptosis, apoptosis and necroptosis, into a single coordinated process that can have harmful effects. Preliminary findings show that PANoptosis occurs in platelets during sepsis, and the team is now examining the mechanism by which this process contributes to uncontrolled inflammation and disordered clotting. Using cell culture studies and mouse models, the HKMU team is collaborating with Prof. Jack Wong Wing-tak, from the School of Life Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, on this three-year project.

聚焦血小板

都大團隊正研究血小板能否用作判斷病情輕重的早期指標。鄧教授解釋：「若能找到客觀的生物標記，就有助在早期識別膿毒症患者，讓醫生及早診斷，而非依靠在病情嚴重時才出現的明顯症狀。」血小板最為人熟知的是其凝血功能，但鄧教授的研究發現，它們在激發免疫反應中亦扮演重要角色。這些免疫反應可能危害膿毒症患者的性命，引發凝血異常、過度炎症，以及血小板數量急劇下降，最終導致器官衰竭。都大團隊現正聚焦研究「泛凋亡」，這是近年發現的一種炎症細胞死亡過程。它將三種細胞自毀機制，分別為焦亡、凋亡和壞死性細胞死亡，結合為單一且協調的過程並同時發生，從而引發免疫系統出現上述問題。團隊的初步研究結果顯示，膿毒症患者的血小板會出現泛凋亡。團隊亦正深入研究此過程導致炎症失控和凝血異常的調控機制。

就這個為期三年的項目，都大團隊正與香港中文大學生命科學學院黃永德教授合作，利用細胞培養和小鼠模型進行研究。

Building on the findings, the team is working to identify protein biomarkers that could signal PANoptosis at an early stage. One promising candidate is gasdermin D (GSDMD), which may serve as an early warning sign of excessive immune activation. The team is also studying another candidate, S100A8/A9, to understand how it may be uniquely activated during sepsis. These candidates could be potential biomarkers for the early diagnosis of severe sepsis, enabling more timely treatment. They may also represent potential therapeutic targets for alternative treatment strategies. “We aim to identify more proteins and translate the findings of the current research into a simple test kit that requires only a few drops of blood, enabling quicker assessment in clinical settings,” adds Prof. Tang. “By better understanding the molecular pathways involved in the body’s response to sepsis through this project, we can incorporate more protein candidates into the test kit to improve its accuracy.”

都大學科躋身QS世界大學學科排名 HKMU subjects ranked in QS Subject Rankings

HKMU has made its debut in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, becoming the city’s first self-financing university to be ranked. The ranking highlights the growing international recognition of HKMU’s academic performance. Six subjects were ranked and three of them made it to the world’s top 150: Art and Design, Performing Arts, and Hospitality and Leisure Management. The other ranked subjects were Education (301–350), Business and Management Studies (551–600), and Computer Science and Information Systems (751–850). In addition, HKMU was ranked 451–500 in the broad subject area of Arts and Humanities. The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 assessed more than 1,900 universities worldwide across 55 disciplines grouped under five broad subject areas. Meanwhile, HKMU made its debut in the 2026/27 Best Global Universities Ranking by U.S. News & World Report in June this year. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 announced in the same month, HKMU remained in the 781–790 range. Among the ten ranked institutions in Hong Kong, HKMU was ranked seventh in Academic Reputation and Employment Outcomes, and eighth in International Research Network and International Students.

A total of 19 HKMU scholars are recognised in the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2025 list compiled by Stanford University and academic publisher Elsevier. The list, covering 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, is based on the number of citations of scholars’ publications, considering the impact of both their career and their work in a single year.

為社區留住回憶 Creating memories for the community

Student volunteers of a new community photography service team at HKMU are finding meaning not only in the images they capture, but also in the connections they build with the people they serve. Formed under the Student Affairs Office’s Me&U Community Caring Programme, the team of 12 students received training in photography and communication skills before launching their service in recent months. Partnering with Hung Hom Community Living Room operated by the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, the Patient Resource Centre of Hong Kong Children’s Hospital and the Methodist Centre, the student volunteers photographed underprivileged families, children receiving medical treatment and elderly people, recording their joyful moments. They also created photo albums for the participants to keep, and reflected on the meaning of family and its community functions.

學生事務處「 Me&U 關懷社區服務計劃」於 2025/26 學年新增了服務小隊「社區光影隊」，讓學生透過攝影，為不同家庭及個人記錄生活中值得珍藏的片刻，並反思家庭的意義和於社區中的功能。由 12 名學生組成的社區光影隊，接受了基礎攝影訓練及與服務對象溝通的培訓後，透過與香港聖公會福利協會紅磡社區客廳、香港兒童醫院病人資源中心及循道衛理中心合作，在過去數月間走進社區，探訪低收入家庭、病童及長者，為他們拍攝照片並製作相冊，留下珍貴回憶。

Hoping to apply the photography skills he had learnt in his studies, Jack soon discovered that photography could go beyond images — it was the interaction with his subjects that mattered. “I learnt to build trust with the families through conversation and simple activities, helping them feel at ease in front of the camera. This was an experience entirely new to me,” he recalls.

家樂本抱着學以致用的心態參加社區光影隊，不久卻發現原來「拍照不只是拍照」。他說：「攝影師需要協調不同的家庭組別，透過活動和交談獲得對方信任，才能捕捉真情流露的一刻。這種重視人與人接觸的過程，是我從未體驗過的拍照經歷。」

Drawn by her passion for photography, Zoe says she learnt that photographs carried not just images, but something more precious: “I realised that family is about being present and staying connected through love, regardless of financial or health challenges.”

淑宜因熱愛攝影而加入義工隊，她發現照片承載的不只是影像：「我看到原來家庭可以有很多種樣貌和形式，無論面對任何經濟或健康考驗，家人就是彼此陪伴、以愛相連的存在。」

The commitment to action-based community engagement earned HKMU the “Hong Kong Volunteer Award 2025: Jockey Club Volunteer Together Outstanding Caring School Award — Finalist” for the Me&U Community Caring Programme, now in its third year. HKMU was the only tertiary institution to receive this honour that year. The Student Affairs Office also won the Gold Award (Group) of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups’“Easy Volunteer” Service Award 2025/26 for the programme and other initiatives.

都大這份以行動連繫社群的理念備受社會肯定。已推行三年的「 Me&U 關懷社區服務計劃」榮獲「 2025 香港義工獎：賽馬會眾心行善傑出愛心學校 — 終選入圍獎」，而都大更是該年度唯一獲得此項殊榮的大專院校。學生事務處亦憑此計劃及其他服務項目，榮獲 2025/26 年度香港青年協會「好義配」義工團體嘉許金狀。

都大兩展覽弘揚中國文化藝術 Chinese culture in focus at HKMU

走進張愛玲的文學世界 Eileen Chang’s legacy

於都大正校園何鴻燊圖書館內新設立的中國現代文學館（上圖）推出「相知無遠近：張愛玲與宋淇、宋鄺文美的跨地半生緣」常設公眾展，展出逾 120 件著名作家張愛玲及其摯友宋淇、宋鄺文美夫婦的珍貴物品，包括手稿、書信、照片及個人物品，由張愛玲遺產管理人宋以朗博士及其姊宋元琳女士慷慨捐贈。展覽通過新媒體藝術，讓觀眾走進張愛玲的文學世界，感受跨越地域的情誼。 The exhibition “Beyond Distance: Half a Lifelong Friendship of Eileen Chang, Stephen Soong and Mae Fong Soong” features more than 120 manuscripts and relics from literary icon Eileen Chang and the Soongs, her close friends. Housed in the new Museum of Modern Chinese Literature (above) at the Stanley Ho Library on the HKMU main campus, the permanent public exhibition has been made possible by a generous donation from Dr Roland Soong and his sister Mrs Elaine Soong Kingman, administrators of Chang’s estate. With the use of digital technology, the exhibition invites visitors to step into Chang’s literary world and learn about the enduring friendships that influenced her creative journey.

粵劇戲服的美學 The aesthetics of Cantonese opera costumes 「裳心貫藝聲好芳華」粵劇戲服展由都大何陳婉珍粵劇研藝中心聯同大學圖書館及田家炳中華文化中心舉辦，於 2 月至 6 月展出多件具歷史與藝術價值的粵劇戲服。展品由多位粵劇名伶、其家屬及藝團借出，涵蓋不同行當。 “Resplendent Attire and Graceful Demeanor: The Cantonese Opera Costume Exhibition” showcased a wide array of costumes for different roles from February to June. Presented by the HKMU Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre in collaboration with the University Library and the Tin Ka Ping Centre of Chinese Culture, the exhibition brought together artefacts loaned from maestros, their families and their troupes.
